秋田竿燈まつり-Akita Kanto Festival-公式ホームページ

The prototype of the Kanto Festival is said to have been created in the Horeki era as a neburi nagashi event to ward off summer illnesses and evil spirits.
The oldest document that remains today is Tsumura Soan's travel writing "Snowy Road" from 1789, which describes the neburi nagashi, which took place on the 6th of the seventh lunar month. At this time, it was already known as a unique Akita custom, and the original form of the kanto is described in the writings of people holding long poles in a cross shape, attaching numerous lanterns to them, and parading through the town while beating drums, with as many as two or three lanterns in total.
Originally, the neburi nagashi, which has been passed down around Akita City since before the feudal era, involved decorating bamboo or alder trees with strips of paper with wishes written on them, parading through the town, and finally releasing them into the river. It is said that this developed into a unique event when it was combined with the popularity of candles in the Horeki era and the tall lanterns hung in front of gates during Obon.
